This page will change frequently as time passes, and as the various clubs or groups pass along their upcoming volunteer opportunities for us to post on this web site. We will post them in chronological order (by date of event) as we get them, along with any contact info and specifics about what might be expected from the Amateur who wants to volunteer for that event or activity. These events are pulled from the SanAntonioHams.org website.

Send your Volunteer Opportunities to the webmaster at info@sanantoniohams.org as soon as you have any details at all. The more advance notice we have, the more advance notice our readers will have. Some folks do have a life outside of Amateur Radio (shame on them!) and they need to arrange their schedules to be able to make these events.

If permission to release contact info for an event has been received, you will find email or phone numbers listed below. If not, check the various club directories, ask another Ham on the air how to find them, or ask someone at KComm for contact info. (They know almost everybody!) You might even look in the San Antonio phone book (gasp!) or go to QRZ.Com for a call sign search. You can also send an inquiry to the webmaster at info@sanantoniohams.org for more information which we can then relay directly to you.

SPECIAL EVENT STATION - Hill Country REACT Team #4804 is sponsoring a WTC911 Commemorative Special Event Station on the anniversary of 9/11, in support of Bob Hejl, W2IK.. "W2IK/WTC911" will once again be in operation to commemorate the World Trade Center Disaster. The W2IK callsign was the first signal to emanate from "Ground Zero" on September 11, 2001, it is only fitting that this callsign be used for this commemorative station.

"W2IK/WTC911" will be in operation beginning 9 AM EST and operating until 11 PM EST and can be found on the upper sections of 15, 20 and 40 meters, all SSB. A special color QSL certificate will be mailed to each station making a contact that sends a LARGE SASE with their QSL card to the QRZ address of W2IK. If you hear us, please work us and post this operation so others may work our station.

Location: Joske Pavilion @ Brackenridge Park, where the river crosses Breckenridge Drive, south of E. Hildebrand Ave, and North of Tuleta Drive.

The Texas QSO party is sponsored each year by the Northwest Amateur Radio Society to encourage contacts between Texas amateur radio operators and amateur radio operators throughout the world. This event is also an excellent opportunity for county hunters to add to their list of Texas counties worked.

The contest occurs on the last full weekend in September each year. In 2006, the dates are the 23rd and 24th of September.

One of the planning goals each year is to have operators in each of the 254 counties in Texas. This the best - and in fact it may be the only - opportunity to make contact with operators in some Texas counties.

Communications sponsorted by SARO

MS-150 Bike to the Beach. More SAG Drivers Needed

SARO needs some more Hams to staff 25 ham equipped SAGS in 2006, plus staffing for break points, etc. See SARO club website for info from last year's event. Over 5 dozen hams are needed to staff break point stations, operate/drive SAG vehicles, ride with medical or supply vehicles, or serve in other capacities. Free basic meals provided to volunteers, plusT-shirt. Some expenses not reimbursed depending upon your assignment, such as over-night hotel expense on Saturday. Route goes from San Antonio @ SBC Center down Hwy 181 to Corpus Christi, using back roads or highways. They anticipate over 4500 riders to be in the 2006 event.

Quality Inn Corpus ChristiMost folks staying over night Saturday, either drive (or hitch a ride) down to Corpus to stay at the Quality Inn (Surfside Drive) or pop back up to San Antonio. Reserve rooms via web by clicking on above logo, and select STANDARD or MATURE RATE for the best deals. You can also try using those coupon books found at most Jim's or Denny's restaurants, but reservations are highly recommended. Hotel prices in Beeville are ridiculous on that weekend, comparable to some of the top rates found on the SA Riverwalk area.

SAG drivers may submit fuel receipts for reimbursement (a process that take about 30 days to complete). Most SAG vehicles put 700+ miles on over the weekend down and back, so bring your credit card for fuel or lots of cash. If you have questions about expense reimbursements, ask before you volunteer to be a SAG driver or other position requiring lots of fuel expense. Volunteers for Break Points typically do not get reimbursed fuel expenses.

to RSVP for this event if you want to operate or tour the station during this time.

Skywarn Recognition Weekend: SKYWARN Recognition Day was developed in 1999 by the National Weather Service and the American Radio Relay League. It celebrates the contributions that volunteer SKYWARN radio operators make to the National Weather Service. During the day SKYWARN operators visit NWS offices and contact other radio operators across the world.

The 2004 SKYWARN Recognition Day (SRD) runs for 24 hours beginning at 0000 UTC on December 4, 2004. There are 100+ NWS stations currently registered to be on the air. In addition to NWS field offices, the National Hurricane Center, the NWS Central Region Headquarters, the Canadian Prairie Storm Prediction Center (Winnipeg), and the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory are registered to participate.

Our local Weather Service office in New Braunfels will be participating in this event and local hams will be allowed to operate from that location to help them make contacts around the USA. Operation hours are from 6pm-10pm Friday, and 8am-4pm on Saturday.

For anyone who hasn't been to their office, they're at the New Braunfels airport in Guadalupe County. To get there, take exit 189 east off IH-35. That will put you on SH46, headed toward Seguin. About 3 miles down the road you'll come to Clear Springs (and the famous catfish restaurant). Turn left onto FM758 (now you're headed north) for another three miles. That will bring you right to the Nexrad Radome; we're in the brown brick building next to it. Pull in anywhere in the parking lot and come on in.

This is sort of like a field day style event from each weather station, trying to make as many contacts that 24 hour period with other weather stations or hams. IRLP reflector node 9219 will be utilized for QSOs with NWS stations. IRLP reflector 9219 will be bridged to the Echolink WX-TALK conference room so that IRLP stations can talk to Echolink stations using one common point of contact. The National Hurricane Center (WX4NHC) will utilize IRLP reflector 9219 from 1700 UTC through 2100 UTC during SRD. Net control operators will develop a list of stations to talk to WX4NHC using an online form. This is similar to the process used during hurricane season.

Run-a-thon - Bandera 100k. This is a 100km trail running race. On Starts at sunrise on Saturday at 7:30am and ends at sunrise on Sunday 7:30am. The town closest is Bandera but its actually in the Hill Country State Natural Area. The race is pretty busy on the first day, but by 3pm, it slows to a crawl. We have a chef working round the clock, so all meals are provided and are actually pretty good. All the aid stations where the radio folks would work are on the main roads and easy to drive up and park.

More Info Here http://www.tejastrails.com/Bandera.html

Event usually held 2nd Saturday - Sunday of month.

Big Bend Ultra Run
Sunday January 14th 2007
MLK Holiday Weekend

Run-a-thon - Big Bend Ultra Run Race. Big Bend National Park, Texas, 50-Mile ~ 80.47K, elevation 2300-1900 ft., Individual and 2 & 4-Person Relay, Cerro Castellan to Rio Grande Village. Hams needed on course, but be prepared for some rough terrain and weather. Hams will need to camp out overnight on the course to be in place for the race the next morning due to the extremely narrow roads leading into the area, so if you aren't physically or mentally set for this type of activity, use caution. Only the areas near the start and/or finish won't require camping out overnight.

The Big Bend Amateur Radio Club has agreed to coordinate the Amateur Radio support for this event. See their club web site at www.bigbendarc.com.

Visit www.bigbend50.com web site for more events details, including their (better have broadband to view this) Video. You can also view maps of the area at this link. Event benefits "Friends of the Big Bend" and proceeds will go toward non-government funded improvements in the park. Not sure what expenses are covered, if any, since over night travel will be required due to distance from San Antonio, so ask the contact person if you have questions along that line, before you leave town. Car pooling by interested hams from the San Antonio area is recommended.

Event usually held on MLK Holiday Weekend.
